Reactivity Trends

Reactivity trends describe how readily chemical substances undergo reactions, providing a framework for predicting whether and how atoms, ions, and compounds will transform. Across the periodic table, changes in atomic radius, shielding, effective nuclear charge, ionization energy, and electronegativity alter the availability of valence electrons and the strength of chemical bonds, producing systematic differences in reactivity. These patterns help explain why metals commonly lose electrons, why nonmetals tend to gain or share them, and how reaction behavior changes across periods and groups. In chemistry, reactivity trends guide equation prediction, material selection, synthesis planning, and interpretation of acid-base and redox processes.

Detecting Reactive Oxygen Species

2023

Reactive oxygen species are chemically active, oxygen-derived molecules capable of oxidizing other molecules. Because of their reactive nature, there are many deleterious effects associated with unchecked ROS production, including structural damage to DNA and other biological molecules. However, ROS can also be mediators of physiological signaling. There is accumulating evidence that ROS play significant roles in everything from activation of transcription factors to the mediation of...

Current Trends in Nursing I

2023

Current trends in nursing include: The changes that have shaped the profession. Guided legislation. The functioning of the present healthcare system. With an increase in the aging population worldwide, it is crucial to train nurses from all healthcare settings to identify approaches that enable older adults to live independently. Nurses also provide essential care and education to manage multiple chronic conditions and ensure the elderly in long-term care receive optimal care and...

Current Trends in Nursing II

2023

Trends in nursing are multifactorial and associated with changes in society, within the nursing profession, and in other professions. Notably, telehealth and remote nursing contribute to successful healthcare delivery for numerous patients and help reduce stress for nurses due to nursing shortages. Nurses can reach patients, monitor their conditions, and interact with them using computers, audio, visual accessories, and telephones—for example, remote patient monitoring systems. Likewise,...

Reactivity of Enols

2023

Enols are a class of compounds where a hydroxyl group is attached to a carbon–carbon double bond, which implies that it is a vinyl alcohol. A carbonyl compound with an α hydrogen undergoes keto–enol tautomerism and remains in equilibrium with its tautomer, the enol form. Usually, the keto tautomer is present in a higher concentration than the enol tautomer due to the higher bond energy of C=O compared to C=C. Moreover, the direction of the keto–enol equilibrium is governed by factors like...

Cross-reactivity

2025

Overview The ability of a single antibody to recognize multiple structurally similar epitopes is an important immune defense strategy that enables the host to efficiently defend against many potentially threatening pathogens. However, cross-reactivity also elicits allergy symptoms against related allergens. It is increasingly important to understand the principles of cross-reactivity, as antibodies are actively being developed as therapeutic modalities for diverse diseases, including cancer.
