Sulfuric Acid Preparation

Sulfuric acid preparation is the chemical production of H₂SO₄, one of the most important industrial acids because it supports fertilizer manufacture, petroleum refining, metal processing, and chemical synthesis. Industrial production commonly uses the Contact Process: sulfur or sulfide ores are oxidized to sulfur dioxide (SO₂), a vanadium(V) oxide catalyst promotes its equilibrium oxidation to sulfur trioxide (SO₃), and SO₃ is absorbed in concentrated acid to form oleum before controlled dilution. Understanding these reaction conditions, gas-handling steps, and exothermic mixing is central to efficient production and safe laboratory-scale study, while the process illustrates catalysis, equilibrium control, and industrial chemical design.

The Sulfur Cycle

2019

Sulfur, an important element in the chemical makeup of proteins, is recycled through the atmosphere and aquatic and terrestrial environments. Found in the atmosphere as sulfur dioxide (SO2), sulfur is released by decaying organisms, weathered rocks, geothermal vents, volcanos, and burning fossil fuels. It is deposited into the ecosystem, cycled through the biotic community, and either released back into the atmosphere as gas or deposited in marine sediment for long-term storage and eventual...

Analyses of the sulfur isotopic composition (δ34S) of pyrite from methane-bearing sediments have typically focused on bulk samples. Here, we applied secondary ion mass spectroscopy to analyze the δ34S values of various pyrite generations to understand the diagenetic history of pyritization.

Sulfur Assimilation

2025

Sulfur is an essential element in biological systems, contributing to synthesizing key biomolecules, including amino acids such as cysteine and methionine, and cofactors such as coenzyme A and biotin. Microorganisms primarily assimilate sulfur as sulfate (SO₄²⁻) from the environment, which must undergo a series of biochemical transformations before it can be incorporated into cellular components. As sulfate is highly oxidized, it must undergo assimilatory sulfate reduction to become...

Preparation of Acid Anhydrides

2025

One of the methods for preparing symmetrical or unsymmetrical acid anhydrides involves the treatment of acid chlorides with the sodium salt of carboxylic acids. The reaction proceeds via a nucleophilic acyl substitution. The carboxylate ion acts as a nucleophile that attacks the carbonyl carbon of the acid chloride to form a tetrahedral intermediate. Subsequently, the re-formation of the carbonyl group with the loss of the chloride ion as a leaving group leads to the formation of an acid...

Synthesis of Ligand-free CdS Nanoparticles within a Sulfur Copolymer Matrix

Herein we present a method to synthesize ligand-free cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles based on a unique sulfur copolymer. The sulfur copolymer operates as a high temperature solvent and a sulfur source during the nanoparticle synthesis and stabilizes the nanoparticles after the reaction.
