Apparent Vd

Apparent volume of distribution (Vd) is a pharmacokinetic measure that relates the total amount of a drug in the body to its measured plasma concentration, indicating how extensively the drug distributes beyond the bloodstream. It is calculated as drug amount in the body divided by plasma concentration, so it represents an apparent volume rather than a true anatomical space; tissue binding, plasma protein binding, lipophilicity, and membrane permeability can substantially affect its value. In clinical pharmacology, Vd helps predict drug distribution, interpret plasma concentrations, estimate loading doses, and anticipate how disease, fluid shifts, or altered binding may change drug exposure and therapy.

Apparent Weight

True weight is the measure of the gravitational force acting on an object. However, if the object accelerates, its measured weight is different from its true weight. Similar observations can be made when the object is submerged in water. An object's weight in water is its apparent weight, which is equal to the difference between its true weight and the buoyant forces. Consider a person standing on a bathroom scale inside an elevator. If the scale is accurate at rest, its reading equals the...

Apparent Weight and the Earth's Rotation

2023

Since all objects on the Earth's surface move through a circle every 24 hours, there must be a net centripetal force on each object, directed towards the center of that circle. The points of the north and south poles are the only exception to this rule. For an object on the Earth's equator, the net centripetal force that accounts for its rotation is the Earth's pull towards its center, or the weight minus the normal force that prevents it from piercing into the Earth's surface. This force,...

Source: Zheng, W. et. al., Diffusion Tensor Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Chronic Spinal Cord Compression. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates diffusion tensor imaging in assessing chronic spinal cord compression. By analyzing water diffusion patterns, fractional anisotropy, and apparent diffusion coefficient values, the findings reveal axonal damage in compressed regions. The findings provide critical insights into spinal cord pathology and structural integrity.

2023

Source: Laboratory of Alan Lester - University of Colorado Boulder The physical properties of minerals include various measurable and discernible attributes, including color, streak, magnetic properties, hardness, crystal growth form, and crystal cleavage. These properties are mineral-specific, and they are fundamentally related to a particular mineral’s chemical make-up and atomic structure. This video examines several physical properties that are useful in field and hand sample mineral...
