Cardiac Patient Care

Cardiac patient care is the coordinated assessment, monitoring, and treatment of people with heart and circulatory disorders, supporting effective perfusion and reducing complications. Clinicians evaluate symptoms, vital signs, heart sounds, electrocardiograms, oxygenation, and fluid status, then use these findings to guide interventions such as medication administration, rhythm management, mobility support, and patient education. In clinical practice, this approach helps identify deterioration early, manage conditions including heart failure, coronary artery disease, and arrhythmias, and promote recovery after procedures or acute events. Consistent, patient-centered care also improves self-management by linking treatment plans with lifestyle changes, follow-up, and warning signs that require urgent attention.

Patient-centered care involves delivering care beyond inpatient hospitalization. Reflective practice can enhance a patient-centered approach. Reflective practice is a process of reasoning that considers all aspects of the present situation, including practicalities, learning from personal practice, and consideration of patient needs. Patients appreciate care decisions made while considering their input. Involving the patient in their care provides the patient with a sense of contribution rather...

Source: Suneel Dhand, MD, Attending Physician, Internal Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Proficiency in the use of a stethoscope to listen to heart sounds and the ability to differentiate between normal and abnormal heart sounds are essential skills for any physician. Correct placement of the stethoscope on the chest corresponds to the sound of cardiac valves closing. The heart has two main sounds: S1 and S2. The first heart sound (S1) occurs as the mitral and tricuspid valves...
