Delayed Release Formulations

Delayed release formulations are drug products designed to postpone medication release until it reaches a specific region of the gastrointestinal tract, improving treatment performance and tolerability. They commonly use enteric coatings or pH-sensitive polymers that remain intact in the acidic stomach but dissolve at the higher pH of the small intestine, while other designs rely on protective barriers or timed-release systems. In clinical practice, this approach can protect acid-sensitive drugs from degradation, reduce gastric irritation, and target delivery to the intestine. Delayed release is therefore important in oral drug development, formulation design, pharmacokinetics, and patient-centered dosing strategies.

Oral Drug Delivery Systems: Delayed-Release Systems

2026

Delayed-release drug delivery systems are specialized pharmaceutical formulations designed to postpone the release of active compounds until the drug reaches a specific region of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, typically the intestine. These systems are essential for drugs that may cause gastric irritation, are unstable in acidic environments, or need to exert therapeutic effects locally in the intestinal or colonic regions. The core feature of delayed-release systems is the use of enteric...

Formulations for Freeze-drying of Bacteria and Their Influence on Cell Survival

Freeze-drying is often an easy and convenient way to obtain dry products of viable bacterial cells. An issue of the process is cell survival. We detail here a procedure to investigate how cell survival during freeze-drying is influenced by the properties of the formulation used.

The Precision of Visual Working Memory with Delayed Estimation

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Human memory is limited. Throughout most of its history, experimental psychology has focused on investigating the discrete, quantitative limits of memory—how many individual pieces of information a person can remember. Recently, experimental psychologists have also become interested in more qualitative limits—how precisely is information stored? The concept of memory precision can be both intuitive and elusive at once. It is...

Measuring Delay Discounting in Humans Using an Adjusting Amount Task

Delay discounting refers to a decline in the value of a reward when it is delayed relative to when it is immediately available. We outline a computer-based delay discounting task that is easy to implement and allows for the quantification of the degree of delay discounting in human participants.
