Drop Arm Test

The Drop Arm Test is a clinical shoulder examination used to assess suspected rotator cuff dysfunction, particularly injury involving the supraspinatus tendon. During the test, the examiner abducts the patient’s arm and asks the patient to lower it slowly and smoothly; an inability to control the descent, sudden dropping, or significant pain may indicate weakness or a rotator cuff tear. Clinicians use this maneuver with patient history, range-of-motion assessment, and other strength tests to guide evaluation of shoulder pain. Because findings are not diagnostic on their own, imaging and additional examination may be needed to confirm structural injury.

Muscles that Move the Arm

Nine muscles are involved in arm movements. Two of these, the pectoralis major and latissimus dorsi, originate from the axial skeleton and are called axial muscles. The other seven originate from the scapula and are called the scapular muscles. The pectoralis major has two origins. Its clavicular head originates on the medial half of the clavicle. In contrast, the sternocostal head originates on the costal cartilages of ribs 1-6, the sternum, and the aponeurosis of the external oblique of the...

2016

We developed a real-time mirror robot system for functional recovery of hemiplegic arms using automatic control technology, conducted a clinical study on healthy subjects, and determined tasks through feedback from rehabilitation doctors. This simple mirror robot can be applied effectively to occupational therapy in stroke patients with a hemiplegic arm.

We have developed a technique for picoinjecting microfluidic drops that does not require metal electrodes. As such, devices incorporating our technique are simpler to fabricate and to use.

Excess Pressure Inside a Drop and a Bubble

The shape of a small drop of liquid can be considered spherical, neglecting the effect of gravity. This drop can further be considered as two equal hemispherical drops put together due to surface tension. The forces acting on the spherical drop are due to the pressure of the liquid inside the drop, the pressure due to air outside the drop, and the force due to the surface tension acting on the two hemispherical drops. where γ corresponds to the surface tension. Recalling that the force per...

Use of an Eight-arm Radial Water Maze to Assess Working and Reference Memory Following Neonatal Brain Injury
