Empyema Drainage

Empyema drainage is a clinical procedure that removes infected fluid and pus from the pleural space, the area between the lungs and chest wall, to control infection and restore lung expansion. Treatment typically uses image-guided or surgically placed chest tubes to provide continuous drainage, often alongside antibiotics; fibrinolytic agents may help break down loculations that prevent fluid from flowing freely. Effective drainage reduces pleural pressure, improves breathing, and supports resolution of the infection. Clinicians select the approach according to fluid organization, patient condition, and response to initial treatment, while surgical intervention may be required when catheter drainage is inadequate.

Acid Mine Drainage

2026

Mining activities that disturb sulfide-rich rocks, particularly those containing pyrite (FeS₂), initiate a cascade of geochemical and microbiological processes with serious environmental implications. When exposed to air and water, pyrite undergoes oxidation, releasing sulfate, ultimately forming sulfuric acid and mobilizing heavy metals into surrounding water systems. This phenomenon, known as acid mine drainage (AMD), results in low pH waters laden with toxic elements that threaten aquatic...

We present a method to collect cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and to create a system which lacks CSF within the embryonic zebrafish brain ventricular system. This allows for further examination of CSF composition and its requirement during embryonic brain development.

Capturing Flow-weighted Water and Suspended Particulates from Agricultural Canals During Drainage Events

Cavity Drainage and Flashings in Masonry walls

2024

Typically, a cavity wall consists of two wythes separated by a gap of at least 2 inches, which may contain insulation while still maintaining a minimum clear space of 1 inch to facilitate adequate drainage. Advanced methods like the insertion of a continuous drainage mat can further reduce this space while ensuring effective moisture expulsion. Weep holes, strategically placed at the base of the cavity, are critical for draining accumulated water. These openings are created by leaving head...
