Insight Judgment Evaluation

Insight and judgment evaluation is a clinical assessment of a person's awareness of their condition, understanding of its consequences, and ability to make safe, reality-based decisions. Clinicians assess insight by examining whether patients recognize symptoms and the need for care, while judgment is evaluated through responses to hypothetical or real-life situations, including problem-solving, risk recognition, and planning. These observations are integrated with the mental status examination, patient history, and behavioral evidence rather than interpreted from a single answer. In psychiatric and medical settings, the evaluation supports diagnostic formulation, treatment planning, capacity assessment, risk management, and decisions about the level of supervision or support required.

Much of this work has focused on the errors people make in judging others, such as the exaggerated influence of central traits (such as "warm" and "cold"), the insufficient weight given to the context in which others' behavior takes place, and the tendency for people to make judgments that conform to their initial expectations about another.

However, with the footbridge dilemma, most people say it is inappropriate to push a large man off of a bridge in order...
