Inter-subject Variability

Inter-subject variability is the variation in biological measurements, disease characteristics, or treatment responses among different individuals, and it is central to interpreting clinical research and care. It arises from differences in genetics, age, physiology, comorbidities, lifestyle, and environmental exposures, which can alter pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and clinical outcomes. Researchers quantify this variability by comparing data across participants and separating it from changes observed within the same person over time. Accounting for inter-subject variability improves clinical trial design, supports appropriate dose selection, clarifies risk and benefit, and provides a foundation for individualized treatment and precision medicine.

Source: Laboratories of Gary Lewandowski, Dave Strohmetz, and Natalie Ciarocco—Monmouth University A within-subjects, or repeated-measures, design is an experimental design where all the participants receive every level of the treatment, i.e., every independent variable. For example, in a candy taste test, the researcher would want every participant to taste and rate each type of candy. This video demonstrates a within-subjects experiment (i.e., one where there is an independent variable with...

The goal of the described approach is to determine at what moments of the paradigm (temporal perspective), and between which regions (spatial perspective), significant reconfigurations in functional connectivity occur on functional magnetic resonance imaging recordings during which a time-locked stimulus is played.

2009

Algorithms assessing heat and mechanical pain thresholds in experimentally inflamed skin of human study subjects are shown. The two pain testing paradigms independently examine nociceptive processing by the two major peripheral nerve fiber populations transmitting pain, i.e., non-myelinated C fibers and small myelinated A-delta fibers.

Cable Subjected to Its Own Weight

2023

Overhead power transmission lines rely on cables to carry electricity across large distances. To ensure the stability and functionality of these lines, it is crucial to understand the shape and tension experienced by the cables under the influence of their weight. A generalized loading function is employed to analyze a cable subjected to its own weight. This function considers the force acting along the cable's arc length rather than its projected length, providing a more accurate...
