Intra-cardiac Pressure Measurement

Intra-cardiac pressure measurement is the direct assessment of blood pressure within the heart’s chambers and great vessels, providing important information about cardiac function and hemodynamics. During cardiac catheterization, a pressure-sensing catheter is advanced through the vascular system into selected cardiac chambers, where a transducer converts pressure changes into electrical signals for waveform recording and analysis. Comparing pressures across chambers helps identify abnormal filling, outflow obstruction, shunt-related gradients, and impaired ventricular performance. In clinical practice, these measurements support the evaluation of valvular and congenital heart disease, pulmonary hypertension, and advanced heart failure, while guiding diagnosis, treatment planning, and procedural decisions.

Source: Hamna J. Qureshi and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana Here we will highlight the key similarities and differences of noninvasive blood pressure measurement techniques between humans and rodents and examine the engineering principles that govern blood pressure. The principles that govern current cuff technology to acquire systolic and diastolic pressures will also be discussed. Commercially available cuffs that connect...
