Physical Activity Guidelines

Physical Activity Guidelines are evidence-based recommendations that define the types, intensity, duration, and frequency of movement associated with health and disease prevention. They distinguish aerobic activity, muscle-strengthening exercise, and sedentary behavior, helping translate physiological principles such as energy expenditure, cardiovascular conditioning, and progressive adaptation into practical targets. In clinical settings, healthcare professionals use these guidelines to assess activity levels, counsel patients, and tailor exercise plans to individual abilities, health conditions, and goals. Applying them can support functional capacity, chronic disease management, and long-term health while providing a consistent framework for preventive care and clinical research.

Assessment of Physical Activity Intensity with Accelerometers and Oxygen Consumption

2025

Here, we present a protocol to assess physical activity intensity levels measured with indirect calorimetry and two accelerometers (on the right wrist and waist) during an incremental walking-jogging test (from 0.84 to 2.37 m/s) on an oval track. The results show differences among the physical intensity assessed through those methods.

Guidelines in Case of a Laboratory Emergency

2023

Robert M. Rioux & Zhifeng Chen, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA The most common laboratory emergencies include chemical spills, fire or explosion, electric shock, and personnel injuries. Most laboratory accidents occur due to poor planning or lack of attention. Therefore, it's always better to prevent accidents (being proactive) than having to take any actions during an emergency (being reactive). For example, always wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) in the...

Guidelines for Sketching a Curve

2026

Curve sketching is a systematic method for understanding the overall behavior of a function by analyzing its key mathematical features. A function defines a curve on the coordinate plane, where the horizontal axis represents the input variable and the vertical axis represents the output. The process begins by determining the domain, which specifies the set of input values for which the function is defined and establishes the horizontal extent of the graph.Intercepts with the horizontal and...

Guidelines for Writing Outcome

2023

When developing expected outcomes for a patient care plan, the nurse should adhere to the following recommendations: Patient outcomes reflect the patient's response to the goal rather than what the nurse aims to achieve. Terminology should be observable and measurable to avoid the reader's interpretation. The desired outcome should be realistic and achievable in the designated care timeframe. Expected outcomes should align with adjunctive therapies. The outcome should enhance care evaluation by...
