Probe Placement Technique

Probe placement technique is the method of positioning a clinical probe against or within the body to obtain reliable measurements, images, or physiological signals. It works by aligning the probe with the target anatomy, maintaining appropriate contact or insertion depth, and optimizing orientation, pressure, and coupling so the device can detect and transmit usable information. In clinical practice, accurate placement supports diagnostic imaging, physiological monitoring, and image-guided procedures while reducing artifacts, discomfort, and measurement error. Standardized placement also improves reproducibility between operators and helps clinicians interpret findings and make informed decisions.

Source: Sharon Bord, MD, Department of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA When monitoring patients, it is important to obtain values that are accurate and reliable. Blood pressure monitoring is one of the essential vital signs, and for a majority of patients, measuring it utilizing non-invasive techniques provides accurate values. However, there are situations in which the blood pressure requires more exact, specific, and reliable measurements.

Source: Julianna Jung, MD, FACEP, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA For unstable patients requiring urgent administration of medications, fluids, or blood products, establishing vascular access quickly is essential. However, there are many factors that can complicate placement of a peripheral intravenous cannula (PIV), and it is extremely common for PIV attempts to fail. PIV placement may be technically challenging in small...

Probe-based confocal laser endomicroscopy enables real-time microscopy of the human urinary tract during cystoscopy, providing dynamic, intravital imaging of pathological states such as bladder cancer with cellular resolution. Endomicroscopy may augment the diagnostic accuracy of standard white light endoscopy and provide intraoperative image guidance to improve surgical resection.

Intrathecal Placement of Lumbar Drain: A Technique to Withdraw Cerebrospinal Fluid from the Lumbar Spine in Porcine Model

2025

This video describes the technique of intrathecal placement of a lumbar drain in a porcine ischemic model, which helps in draining the cerebrospinal fluid to a drainage system. The cerebrospinal fluid pressure is monitored by the drainage system, and fluid is drained to maintain a constant cerebrospinal fluid pressure.
