Rational Drug Design

Rational drug design is a systematic approach to developing medicines by using knowledge of a biological target, its structure, and the molecular features required for therapeutic activity. Researchers identify a disease-relevant target, analyze how potential compounds interact with it, and use computational modeling, structure-based or ligand-based design, and structure–activity relationship studies to optimize potency and selectivity. Laboratory assays then evaluate binding, biological effects, pharmacokinetics, and safety before clinical testing. In clinical research, rational drug design can shorten discovery timelines, improve candidate quality, and support the development of treatments tailored to defined molecular mechanisms and patient needs.

Using Your Head: Measuring Infants' Rational Imitation of Actions

2023

Source: Laboratories of Judith Danovitch and Nicholaus Noles—University of Louisville One of the main challenges of infancy is to learn how to achieve one’s goals in the world, whether they are to pick up a toy or to express desires to another person, and one of the most powerful tools in this learning process is imitation. However, imitation is not always as simple as copying other people’s actions; it is also necessary to realize that goals and intentions guide behavior. The world is a...

Structure-Activity Relationships and Drug Design

2024

Drug design is a dynamic field that involves discovering and developing new medications based on specific biological targets. This process heavily relies on structure-activity relationships (SAR) and quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) to guide the design and optimization of efficient drugs. SAR studies the intricate relationship between a drug's chemical structure and biological activity. It focuses on understanding how modifications to a drug's structure can influence its...

Rationalizing Substitutions

Integrals involving non-rational functions are often difficult to evaluate using standard techniques, especially when radicals appear in the integrand. Rationalizing substitution provides a systematic method for simplifying such integrals by converting them into rational forms that are easier to handle.Consider a rod whose linear mass density depends on a constant linear density, a characteristic length, and the distance from the left end of the rod. Determining the total mass requires...

Rational Expressions

2025

Rational expressions are algebraic fractions in which both the numerator and the denominator are polynomials. These expressions follow the arithmetic rules of numerical fractions but require extra care due to the presence of variables. A fundamental part of working with rational expressions is identifying values that make the expression undefined, typically those that result in division by zero or undefined radicals.Determining the DomainThe domain of a rational expression includes all real...

2016

We describe a low cost, configurable morbidostat that enables the characterization of antibiotic drug resistance by dynamically adjusting the drug concentration. The device can be integrated with a multiplexed microfluidic platform. The approach can be scaled up for laboratory antibiotic drug resistance studies.
