Semicritical Items

Semicritical items are reusable clinical devices that contact mucous membranes or nonintact skin and therefore require more than routine cleaning to prevent infection transmission. Their reprocessing begins with thorough cleaning to remove organic material, followed by high-level disinfection, which eliminates vegetative bacteria, viruses, fungi, and mycobacteria while targeting most microbial contamination; sterilization is preferred when the device and materials permit it. Examples include flexible endoscopes, respiratory therapy equipment, and vaginal ultrasound probes. Correct classification and reprocessing of semicritical items support safe patient care while protecting device function and reducing healthcare-associated infections.

Instead, humans develop categories. Categories are mental representations of real things that can be used for a variety of purposes.
