Skewness Kurtosis

Skewness and kurtosis are statistical measures that describe the shape of a probability distribution, helping researchers assess whether clinical data follow a balanced, normally shaped pattern. Skewness quantifies asymmetry around the mean, while kurtosis reflects the prominence of extreme values and the distribution’s tail weight; both are calculated from standardized central moments. In clinical research, these measures support data screening, selection of appropriate statistical tests, identification of outliers, and evaluation of assumptions underlying models such as regression and analysis of variance. Interpreting them alongside visualizations and other summary statistics can improve the reliability of conclusions from patient and laboratory data.

Microsoft Excel: Finding Central Tendency, Skew, and Kurtosis

Central tendency refers to the central point or typical value of a dataset. It summarizes the data set with a single value that represents the center of its distribution. The three main measures of central tendency are: Mean: The arithmetic average of all data points. It is calculated by adding all the values together and dividing by the number of values. The mean is sensitive to extreme values (outliers). Median: The middle value when the data points are arranged in ascending or descending...

The measures of central tendency calculated from a data set may not reveal much about its intrinsic distribution. If a plot is made of the data set’s values, the mean and the median may not only differ, but also the plot may have more values on one side of the central tendencies. Such a data set is said to be skewed towards that side. The longer the tail of the plot on one side, the more skewed it is. The skewness of a data set’s values suggests that the measures of central tendency are...

If the frequency distribution of a data set is more inclined towards smaller or larger values, the distribution is said to be skewed. If data values are skewed to the right, then the distribution is called positively skewed. Conversely, if the plot is skewed to the left, the distribution is called negatively skewed. For instance, in the middle of a pandemic, the geographical distribution of vaccine coverage may be positively skewed towards populations in the global north countries. However,...

We demonstrate how to determine the size distribution of semiconductor nanocrystals in a quantitative manner using Raman spectroscopy employing an analytically defined multi-particle phonon confinement model. Results obtained are in excellent agreement with the other size analysis techniques like transmission electron microscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy.
