Strain Differences

Strain differences are genetic and phenotypic variations among strains within the same species, and they can influence how organisms behave in clinical settings. These differences arise from changes in inherited DNA, gene expression, virulence factors, antimicrobial resistance determinants, or other biological traits that affect growth, transmission, immune interactions, and treatment response. Recognizing strain differences supports accurate pathogen identification, epidemiological tracking, infection-control decisions, and selection of appropriate therapies. In clinical research, comparing strains also helps explain variation in disease severity and treatment outcomes, improving diagnostic interpretation and strengthening efforts to monitor emerging or drug-resistant variants.

Measurement of Compressive Stress-Strain Response at Small-Strains

2025

This protocol presents the configuration of a compression test device capable of precisely measuring the mechanical properties of microstructures in the small-strain region, along with a systematic method for compression testing using this device. The proposed device can be used to analyze various microstructures and the mechanical behavior of polymer-based materials.

Just-noticeable Differences

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Psychophysics is a branch of psychology and neuroscience that tries to explain how physical quantities are translated into neural firing and mental representations of magnitude. One set of questions in this area pertains to just-noticeable differences (JND): How much does something need to change in order for the change to be perceivable? To pump intuitions about this, consider the fact that small children grow at an enormous...

Stress-Strain Characteristics of Steels

2023

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA The importance of materials to human development is clearly captured by the early classifications of world history into periods such as the Stone Age, Iron Age, and the Bronze Age. The introduction of the Siemens and Bessemer processes to produce steels in the mid-1800s is arguably the single most important development in launching the Industrial Revolution that transformed much of Europe and...

Stress-Strain Characteristics of Aluminum

2023

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Aluminum is one of the most abundant materials in our lives, as it is omnipresent in everything from soda cans to airplane components. Its widespread use is relatively recent (1900AD), primarily because aluminum does not occur in its free state, but rather in combination with oxygen and other elements, often in the form of Al2O3. Aluminum was originally obtained from bauxite mineral deposits...

Assessing Differences in Sperm Competitive Ability in Drosophila

2013

Differential sperm competitive ability among Drosophila males with distinct genotypes can be ascertained through double-mating experiments. Each of these experiments involves one of the males of interest and a reference male. Readily identifiable markers in the progeny allow inference of the fraction of individuals fathered by each male.
