Thyroid Palpation

Thyroid palpation is a clinical examination technique used to assess the thyroid gland’s size, shape, position, consistency, and tenderness, helping identify abnormalities in the neck. During the examination, the clinician gently palpates the gland while the patient swallows, using movement of the thyroid relative to surrounding tissues to evaluate enlargement, asymmetry, nodules, or pain. This hands-on assessment supports the initial evaluation of goiter, thyroid inflammation, and other thyroid disorders, although palpable findings generally require correlation with medical history, thyroid function tests, and imaging. Correct positioning, systematic examination, and comparison of both lobes improve the reliability of clinical findings.
