Urinary Obstruction

Urinary obstruction is a blockage that partially or completely prevents urine from flowing through the urinary tract, making it an important clinical cause of pain, infection, and impaired kidney function. The obstruction increases pressure upstream as urine accumulates, potentially producing ureteral dilation, hydronephrosis, and reduced filtration; stones, strictures, prostate enlargement, or masses can create this blockage. Clinicians assess symptoms, urine studies, blood tests, and imaging to identify its location and severity. Prompt relief through measures such as catheter drainage, ureteral stents, nephrostomy, or treatment of the underlying cause can restore urine flow and help prevent permanent renal injury.

The murine model of irreversible unilateral ureteric obstruction (UUO) is presented together with the model of reversible UUO in which the ureteric obstruction is relieved by anastomosis of the severed ureter into the bladder. These models enable the study of renal inflammation and scarring as well as tissue remodeling.
