Aluminum Foil Barrier

An aluminum foil barrier is an opaque, reflective layer used to block light or physically separate regions of a biological experiment, helping researchers control environmental exposure during development. Its metal surface reflects and attenuates incoming light, while the flexible sheet creates a localized shield that can isolate samples, embryos, tissues, or treatment areas without permanently changing the surrounding setup. In developmental biology, this simple barrier supports controlled comparisons by producing exposed and shielded conditions, allowing investigators to evaluate how light exposure influences embryonic patterning, growth, or differentiation. Its low cost, easy application, and removal make it useful for repeatable laboratory experiments.

Stress-Strain Characteristics of Aluminum

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Aluminum is one of the most abundant materials in our lives, as it is omnipresent in everything from soda cans to airplane components. Its widespread use is relatively recent (1900AD), primarily because aluminum does not occur in its free state, but rather in combination with oxygen and other elements, often in the form of Al2O3. Aluminum was originally obtained from bauxite mineral deposits...

2017

An experimental protocol for instrumented warm rotary forming of cast aluminum alloys employing a bespoke industrially scaled apparatus is presented. Experimental considerations including thermal and mechanical effects are discussed, as well as similitude with full-scale processing of automotive wheels.

Application of Impermeable Barriers Combined with Candidate Factor Soaked Beads to Study Inductive Signals in the Chick

2016

Protocols using impermeable barriers to block induction events between tissues of the main body axis and flank in the chick embryo required for limb formation are described. Beads soaked in candidate inductive signals are used to overcome the effect of barrier placement and analysis of gene expression confirms this.

2016

A protocol for measuring flame speeds of a reactive mixture composed of tetraiodine nonoxide (I4O9) and aluminum (Al) is presented. A method for resolving reaction kinetics using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is also presented. It was found that I4O9 is 150% more reactive than other iodine(V) oxides.
