Fecundity Fertility Assay

A fecundity fertility assay is a quantitative test of reproductive performance, measuring how many eggs or offspring an organism produces and whether reproduction yields viable progeny. In developmental biology, the assay typically records reproductive output over a defined period and distinguishes fecundity, or egg production, from fertility, which depends on successful fertilization and subsequent development. Researchers use these measurements to evaluate genetic effects, environmental conditions, developmental defects, and reproductive toxicity in model organisms. By linking reproductive capacity with embryo or offspring viability, the assay provides an accessible endpoint for studying factors that influence development across generations.

Fertilization

During fertilization, an egg and sperm cell fuse to create a new diploid structure. In humans, the process occurs once the egg has been released from the ovary, and travels into the fallopian tubes. The process requires several key steps: 1) sperm present in the genital tract must locate the egg; 2) once there, sperm need to release enzymes to help them burrow through the protective zona pellucida of the egg; and 3) the membranes of a single sperm cell and egg must fuse, with the sperm...

Toxicological Assays for Testing Effects of an Epigenetic Drug on Development, Fecundity and Survivorship of Malaria Mosquitoes

A protocol is developed to examine the effects of an epigenetic drug DZNep on the development, fecundity and survivorship of mosquitoes. Here we describe procedures for the aqueous exposure of DZNep to immature mosquitoes and a blood-based exposure of DZNep to adult mosquitoes in addition to measuring SAH hydrolase inhibition.

The zebrafish is a powerful model system for developmental biology and human disease research due to their genetic similarity with higher vertebrates. This protocol describes a methodology to create haploid zebrafish embryos that can be utilized for forward screen strategies to identify recessive mutations in genes essential for early embryogenesis.
