Oocyte Cytoplasmic Transfer

Oocyte cytoplasmic transfer is an assisted reproductive technique in which cytoplasm from a donor oocyte is introduced into a recipient oocyte, allowing researchers to examine how cytoplasmic components influence development. The transferred material can include mitochondria, messenger RNAs, proteins, and other factors that support oocyte maturation, fertilization, and early embryonic development; the recipient oocyte is then fertilized and monitored for developmental competence. In developmental biology, this approach has helped investigate interactions between the nucleus and cytoplasm and has been studied as a strategy for certain infertility conditions. However, mitochondrial heteroplasmy, genetic transmission, safety, and ethical considerations remain important limitations.

The cytoplasm consists of organelles and a framework of protein scaffolds called the cytoskeleton suspended in an aqueous solution, the cytosol. The cytosol is a rich broth of water, ions, salts, and various organic molecules.Protein Folding and MisfoldingThe cytoplasm is the location for several cellular processes, including protein synthesis and folding. The aqueous nature of the cytosol promotes protein folding such that the hydrophobic amino acid side chains are buried in the protein core...
