Zebrafish Embryo Development

Zebrafish embryo development is the coordinated progression from fertilization through cleavage, gastrulation, organogenesis, and hatching, providing a visible model for studying how vertebrate body plans form. After external fertilization, rapid cell divisions produce a blastoderm, while morphogenetic movements and signaling pathways establish the germ layers, body axes, and emerging organs. Because embryos are small, transparent, and accessible to genetic manipulation, researchers can combine microscopy with mutant or transgenic approaches to track cell behaviors in real time. These features support research on gene function, congenital disorders, regeneration, toxicology, and drug responses, linking developmental mechanisms to biomedical applications.

The zebrafish (Danio rerio) has become a popular model for studying genetics and developmental biology. The transparency of these animals at early developmental stages permits the direct visualization of tissue morphogenesis at the cellular level. Furthermore, zebrafish are amenable to genetic manipulation, allowing researchers to determine the effect of gene expression on the development of a vertebrate with a high degree of genetic similarity to humans. This video provides a brief overview of...

We introduce a novel hypoxic chamber system for use with aquatic organisms such as frog and zebrafish embryos. Our system is simple, robust, cost-effective and allows the induction and sustainment of hypoxia in vivo and for up to 48 h. We present 2 reproducible methods to monitor the effectiveness of hypoxia.

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are an important model organism that is particularly valuable for research in developmental biology. Zebrafish are extremely fertile and can produce hundreds of progeny per week, so it is relatively easy to collect a large number of embryos for high sample numbers. Furthermore, zebrafish undergo rapid development and embryos are transparent, allowing for easy visualization of developmental processes. This video covers the steps required for the collection of newly...
