Aerodynamic Center

The aerodynamic center is the point on an airfoil or wing where the pitching moment produced by aerodynamic forces remains essentially constant as angle of attack changes. It arises because changes in pressure distribution alter the location of the resultant lift while preserving its moment about this reference point; in subsonic thin-airfoil analysis, it commonly lies near the quarter-chord. Engineers use the aerodynamic center to calculate lift and pitching moments, assess static stability, and locate aircraft or rotorcraft control surfaces. Understanding its position supports airfoil design, aerodynamic modeling, and prediction of handling qualities across operating conditions.

Source: Jose Roberto Moreto and Xiaofeng Liu, Department of Aerospace Engineering, San Diego State University, San Diego, CA The low-speed wind tunnel is a valuable tool to study aircraft aerodynamic characteristics and evaluate aircraft performance and stability. Using a scale model of a DC-6B aircraft that has a removable tail and a 6-component external aerodynamic force balance, we can measure the lift coefficient (CL), drag coefficient (CD), pitching moment coefficient (CM), and yaw moment...

Multicopter Aerodynamics: Characterizing Thrust on a Hexacopter

Source: Prashin Sharma and Ella M. Atkins, Department of Aerospace Engineering, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI Multicopters are becoming popular for a variety of hobby and commercial applications. They are commonly available as quadcopter (four thrusters), hexacopter (six thrusters), and octocopter (eight thrusters) configurations. Here, we describe an experimental process to characterize the multicopter performance. A modular small hexacopter platform providing propulsion unit...

Lattice Centering and Coordination Number

The structure of a crystalline solid, whether a metal or not, is best described by considering its simplest repeating unit, which is referred to as its unit cell. The unit cell consists of lattice points that represent the locations of atoms or ions. The entire structure then consists of this unit cell repeating in three dimensions. The three different types of unit cells present in the cubic lattice are illustrated in Figure 1. Types of Unit Cells Imagine taking a large number of identical...

Center of Gravity

The center of gravity is the point at which an object's weight appears to be concentrated and can be used to balance the object perfectly. This point is essential in mechanics as it provides information regarding a body's stability and moments of inertia. The center of gravity does not always have to fall within the shape or boundaries of the body; it may also lie outside the body in certain cases. To determine its location, the principle of moments can be utilized by dividing the object into...

Center of Mass

The center of mass is the point at which the total mass of an object can be said to be concentrated. It is a fundamental principle in mechanics and physics that applies to all objects regardless of their shape or size. The center of gravity is the point at which an object’s weight appears to be concentrated and can be used to balance the object perfectly. The knowledge of the center of mass can also help us to describe and predict the motion of objects. For example, when a ball is thrown into...
