Arc Extinction

Arc extinction is the process of interrupting and preventing the reformation of an electrical arc that forms when current-carrying contacts separate. It works by reducing the arc’s temperature and conductivity through cooling, lengthening, deionization, or movement into an arc-control medium, while the surrounding insulation recovers enough dielectric strength to withstand the transient recovery voltage. In alternating-current circuit breakers, interruption is often achieved near a natural current zero, when the system rapidly restores insulation between the contacts. Effective arc extinction protects equipment, limits fault energy, and enables reliable operation of power-distribution and industrial switching systems.

The History of Life on Earth Fossils of organisms that were different from anything alive today had been documented as early as the 17th century, but it was not until the early 19th century that scientists began to recognize that the successive layers of fossil bearing rocks were like successive pages in the history of life on earth. Although this recognition gave rise to the birth of the field of paleontology, the idea of complete global extinction of a species had yet to be fully accepted. At...

Feeding difficulties are a common problem for children with developmental disorders, including autism, and behavioral interventions often include escape extinction. Recent research has begun to evaluate treatments that do not include escape extinction. This manuscript describes a multicomponent treatment package that does not use escape extinction to treat feeding difficulties.

Arc Length Function

2026

The arc length function represents the total distance traveled along a smooth curve measured from a fixed starting point to a variable endpoint. For curves that are continuous and differentiable, arc length provides a precise way to quantify distance when straight-line approximations are insufficient. To derive arc length, the curve is divided into many small segments. Each segment is approximated by a straight line whose length depends on the horizontal and vertical changes over that interval.
