Attenuation

Attenuation is the reduction in the strength, intensity, or amplitude of a signal as it travels through a medium or system. In engineering, it occurs when energy is absorbed, scattered, reflected, or dissipated by material resistance, geometric spreading, or impedance changes, and it is commonly quantified in decibels. Engineers analyze attenuation in electrical cables, optical fibers, wireless channels, acoustic systems, and mechanical structures to predict signal loss and preserve performance. Measuring and controlling attenuation supports reliable data transmission, clear sound reproduction, accurate sensing, and effective vibration isolation, while also guiding material selection, system design, and compensation strategies.

Transcription Attenuation in Prokaryotes

2020

Transcriptional attenuation occurs when RNA transcription is prematurely terminated due to the formation of a terminator mRNA hairpin structure. Bacteria use these hairpins to regulate the transcription process and control the synthesis of several amino acids including histidine, lysine, threonine, and phenylalanine. Transcription attenuation takes place in the non-coding regions of mRNA. There are several different mechanisms used to attenuate transcription. In ribosome mediated...

Cited by 3 •

2015

The goal of the protocol described in this paper is to induce compulsive-like behavior in rats for the study of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This behavior is precipitated by attenuating a signal indicating that a lever-press response was effective in producing food.

Intradermal Immunization with Live Attenuated Sporozoites in a Mouse Model

2025

This video demonstrates an assay for immunizing a mouse model with live attenuated sporozoites. The radiation-attenuated Plasmodium sporozoites are injected into the dorsal side of the mouse's ear. After injections at multiple locations on both ears, the mouse is allowed to recover.

Generating Recombinant Live-Attenuated Influenza Viruses for Vaccines

2025

The video showcases a method to create cold-adapted recombinant influenza viruses. It involves transfecting human cells with bi-directional plasmids, followed by incubation at lower temperature incubation to yield viruses suitable for vaccine production, characterized by reduced replication in warmer conditions.

Fluid-Attenuated Inversion Recovery Magnetic Resonance Imaging to Visualize Multiple Sclerosis Lesions

Position the head of a patient with multiple sclerosis inside the radiofrequency or RF coil of an MRI machine.Begin fluid-attenuated inversion recovery or FLAIR imaging. Select a brain slice containing lesions near CSF-rich areas. The system generates a strong magnetic field, aligning protons in healthy and lesioned brain tissue and CSF along its direction, creating net magnetization.Apply an inversion RF pulse to flip the magnetization of all protons, aligning them opposite to the magnetic...
