Basic Insulation Level

Basic insulation level is a standardized lightning impulse withstand rating that indicates the peak voltage an electrical insulation system can endure without disruptive failure. It supports insulation coordination by comparing equipment strength with expected overvoltages from lightning and system transients. During testing, equipment receives a prescribed impulse waveform, often represented by a rapid rise followed by a slower decay, while repeated trials assess flashover or breakdown performance. Engineers use basic insulation level to select clearances, specify transformers, switchgear, and transmission equipment, and coordinate protective devices such as surge arresters. This rating improves system reliability and helps standardize designs across power networks.

Conductors and Insulators

2023

Some materials may easily let electrical charges pass through them, while others obstruct their flow. The former are called conductors and the latter insulators. The atomic structures of materials determine whether they are conductors or insulators of electricity. Most metals are conductors. Their atomic configuration is such that one or more electron(s) are loosely bound to the nucleus in each atom. Thus, a sea of mobile electrons are available in them, known as free electrons. Their easy...

Insulation Coordination

2024

Insulation coordination is the process of matching electric equipment's insulation strength with protective device characteristics to protect the equipment against expected overvoltages. This selection is based on engineering judgment and cost. Equipment can generally withstand short-duration high transient overvoltages, but repeated tests with identical waveforms can yield inconsistent results. As a result, standard impulse voltage waveforms are used for testing, defined by specific times for...

Basic Mouse Care and Maintenance

Mice (Mus musculus) are small rodents that breed and sexually mature quickly, making them perfectly suited to generating large animal colonies for biological research. As compared to other mammalian species, mice are simple and inexpensive to maintain in the laboratory. Nevertheless, mouse colonies do have specific husbandry needs that are critical to preserving animal health and safety as well as experimental reproducibility. This video demonstrates standard practices that ensure mice are...

Thermal Insulation in Masonry Walls

2024

In hot, dry climates, the thermal mass of masonry walls can be beneficial, absorbing heat during the day and releasing it at night, thereby stabilizing indoor temperatures. However, in most other climates, additional insulation is necessary to enhance thermal resistance. External insulation can be applied using an Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS), which involves affixing panels of plastic foam to the wall and covering them with a polymeric stucco reinforced with glass fiber mesh.
