Conditional Preparation Technique

Conditional preparation is an engineering method that adapts how a component, system, or experiment is prepared according to predefined conditions, requirements, or observed inputs. The process evaluates factors such as material state, operating limits, or test criteria, then selects, modifies, or stops preparation when those conditions are met or violated. This approach supports reliable assembly, calibration, testing, and process control by matching preparation steps to the system’s actual state rather than applying a fixed procedure. It can reduce errors, improve resource use, and provide a foundation for automated or feedback-based engineering workflows.

Source: Lin, P., et al. Synthesizing Sodium Tungstate and Sodium Molybdate Microcapsules via Bacterial Mineral Excretion. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates the preparation of a monoclonal bacterial culture for mineral production through serial dilution and colony isolation on an agar plate. By shaking the plate with glass beads, individual cells are spatially separated to form genetically uniform colonies, which are then transferred to liquid media for growth. The culture with the...

As obligate anaerobic organisms are unable to grow upon oxygen exposure, the use of anaerobic culturing techniques is indispensable. Here, we demonstrate a simple and effective method to cultivate a mixed culture derived from a biogas plant from media preparation to gas and volatile fatty acid quantification.

Sample Preparation for Analysis: Advanced Techniques

2024

Accurate analysis of complex samples often requires advanced preparation techniques to achieve reliable and reproducible results. Samples containing inorganic or organic materials can be challenging to dissolve or decompose effectively. Standard sample preparation methods include acid digestion, fusion, dry ashing, and wet digestion. Acid digestion with strong acids is commonly used to dissolve inorganic materials that are insoluble (do not dissolve) in water. This method can be useful for...
