Densenet-121

DenseNet-121 is a convolutional neural network architecture designed for visual recognition, using dense connectivity to improve feature reuse and information flow across deep models. Each layer receives the feature maps produced by every preceding layer in the same dense block, concatenating them rather than summing them; transition layers use 1×1 convolutions and pooling to reduce feature dimensions between blocks. This arrangement can strengthen gradient propagation while limiting redundant feature learning, often with fewer parameters than comparably deep networks. In engineering, DenseNet-121 supports image classification, defect detection, medical-image analysis, and transfer learning, where pretrained representations can be adapted to specialized datasets.

The use of a model that mimics the condition of lung diseases in humans is critical for studying the pathophysiology and/or etiology of a particular disease and for developing therapeutic intervention. Here a noninvasive intratracheal intubation method that can directly deliver exogenous materials to mouse lungs is presented.

Proper Use of Autoclaves

2023

Robert M. Rioux & Zhifeng Chen, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Autoclaving is one of the most commonly used methods in the laboratory for the purpose of decontamination. The most common items decontaminated with an autoclave are those that contact biological samples (typically those containing microorganisms). An autoclave works by utilizing pressurized high temperature steam to kill microorganisms present in the loaded materials. Sufficient steam flow and heat transfer...

Preparation of Bacterial Nanocellulose Pellicles from Cellulose-Producing Bacteria

Source: Arias, S. L., et al. Fabrication of a Functionalized Magnetic Bacterial Nanocellulose with Iron Oxide Nanoparticles. J. Vis. Exp. (2016).This video demonstrates the production of nanocellulose by culturing cellulose-producing bacteria in a nutrient medium containing mannitol. The bacteria metabolize mannitol into glucose, which is then polymerized and extruded as glucan chains that crystallize into cellulose sheets, forming a three-dimensional matrix at the air–liquid interface. The...
