Force Amplification

Force amplification is the engineering use of a system to produce an output force greater than the input force, enabling manageable inputs to move, clamp, lift, or deform larger loads. It works by trading motion or distance for force: mechanisms such as levers and gears alter torque, while hydraulic systems transmit pressure through a fluid so a force applied to a small piston can generate a larger force at a larger piston. Because ideal systems conserve work, increased force is accompanied by reduced displacement, with friction and other losses lowering performance. Force amplification supports presses, jacks, brakes, robotic actuators, and assistive devices, and guides the design of efficient load-handling systems.

Source: Tomás, J. M., et al. Generation of Null Mutants to Elucidate the Role of Bacterial Glycosyltransferases in Bacterial Motility. J. Vis. Exp. (2022).This video demonstrates the initiator-dependent amplification of a suicide plasmid in E. coli. The plasmid, which carries an antibiotic resistance gene, replicates only in the presence of an initiator protein encoded by the host. After electroporation and incubation in recovery medium, the mixture is plated on antibiotic-containing agar.

Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification for Bacterial Gene Detection

(2020).This video demonstrates the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) technique for detecting a target bacterial gene by amplifying DNA at a constant temperature. The reaction mixture is prepared by adding an isothermal master mix, specific primers for the target gene, and samples containing DNA templates. The...

Intermolecular Forces

Atoms and molecules interact through bonds (or forces): intramolecular and intermolecular. The forces are electrostatic as they arise from interactions (attractive or repulsive) between charged species (permanent, partial, or temporary charges) and exist with varying strengths between ions, polar, nonpolar, and neutral molecules. The different types of intermolecular forces are ion–dipole, dipole–dipole, hydrogen bonds, and dispersion; among these, dipole–dipole, hydrogen bonds, and dispersion...
