Gauge Length

In engineering, gauge length is the defined distance between two reference marks on a test specimen, usually the portion used to measure deformation during a mechanical test. In a tensile test, an extensometer or marked reference points track the change in this distance as the specimen is loaded, allowing engineering strain to be calculated as elongation divided by the original gauge length. Correctly selecting and reporting gauge length supports consistent measurements of ductility, tensile behavior, and failure strain because measured elongation depends on specimen length and geometry. It is therefore essential in standardized materials testing and in comparing metals, polymers, and other engineered materials across laboratories or designs.

Pressure Gauges

Most pressure gauges, like those on scuba tanks, are calibrated to read zero at atmospheric pressure. Readings from such gauges are called the gauge pressure, which is the pressure relative to atmospheric pressure. When the pressure inside the tank exceeds atmospheric pressure, the gauge reports a positive value. Some gauges are designed to measure negative pressure. For example, many physics experiments must take place in a vacuum chamber, a rigid chamber from which some of the air is pumped...

Design Example: Strain Gauge Bridge or Wheatstone Bridge

2024

The utilization of strain gauges as transducers for converting mechanical strain into electrical signals is a common practice in various engineering applications. These strain gauges are frequently integrated into Wheatstone bridge circuits to accurately measure parameters such as force or pressure. Within this context, each element within the circuit exhibits a resistance that undergoes subtle variations when subjected to mechanical strain. The primary objective is to convert minuscule...

2016

Here we describe how to build a robust spring-transport mechanism for a spinning rotor gauge. This device securely immobilizes the rotor and keeps it under vacuum during transportation. We also describe packaging that minimizes the risk of damage during transport. Tests show our design works for typical shocks during transport.
