Gold Coating

Gold coating is the application of a thin layer of gold to a surface to modify its electrical, chemical, optical, or corrosion-resistant properties. Engineers deposit gold using processes such as electroplating, physical vapor deposition, or sputtering, with coating thickness and substrate preparation controlling adhesion, conductivity, durability, and surface performance. Because gold resists oxidation and maintains reliable electrical contact, gold coatings support connectors, circuit components, sensors, and precision instruments. Their optical reflectivity and chemical stability also make them useful in specialized engineering systems, although material cost and careful control of deposition conditions influence design choices.

We describe a method of synthesizing biocompatible 10-nm gold nanoparticles, functionalized by coating poly-ethylene glycol onto the surface. These particles can be used in vitro and in vivo for delivering therapeutics to nanoscale cellular and extracellular spaces that are difficult to access with conventional nanoparticle sizes.
