Image Enhancement

Image enhancement is the computational improvement of an image’s visual quality or interpretability by emphasizing useful features and reducing distracting artifacts. In engineering, algorithms modify pixel intensities through operations such as contrast stretching, histogram equalization, spatial filtering, sharpening, and noise reduction, often without changing the underlying scene. These methods improve edges, textures, and low-contrast structures in images captured by cameras, microscopes, sensors, and inspection systems. Image enhancement supports machine vision, medical and industrial imaging, remote sensing, and quality control by making important information easier for people or automated systems to detect, measure, and analyze.

Contrast enhanced small animal vessel imaging by microCT is a rapid, cost-effective and high-throughput technique for serial in situ examination for tumor development, for analyzing the network of blood vessels that nourish them, and for following the response of tumors to preclinical therapeutic intervention(s).

Brain Imaging Investigation of the Memory-Enhancing Effect of Emotion

We present a protocol that uses functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the neural correlates of the memory-enhancing effect of emotion. This protocol allows identification of brain activity specifically linked to memory-related processing, contrary to more general perceptual processing, and can be used with healthy and clinical populations.

Convection-enhanced delivery (CED) has been proposed as a treatment option for a wide range of neurological diseases. In order to prepare health care professionals for adoption of CED, accessible training models are needed. We describe the use of agarose gel as such a model of the human brain for testing, research, and training.
