Internal Voltage

Internal voltage is the electric potential difference that exists within a device, material, or circuit, even when it is not directly measured at external terminals. It arises from charge separation and the resulting electric fields, or from electrochemical gradients, semiconductor junctions, and induced electrical effects that redistribute charge inside the system. Engineers analyze internal voltage to understand how batteries generate power, how semiconductor components control current, and how sensors and circuits respond to applied conditions. Measuring or modeling it helps predict device behavior, identify losses and failure modes, and improve the design, stability, and safety of electrical and electronic systems.

External electric field induces a voltage on the membrane of a cell, termed the induced membrane voltage (ΔΦ). By using the potentiometric dye di-8-ANEPPS, it is possible to measure the ΔΦ noninvasively. This video shows the protocol for measuring ΔΦ using di-8-ANEPPS.

The movement of electrons in a conductor requires some form of energy or work, usually provided by an external force, like a battery. This force is called the electromotive force or voltage. The voltage between two points, referred to as points "a" and "b," in an electric circuit is the energy (or work) needed to move a unit charge from point "a" to point "b," and this relationship is expressed mathematically as In this equation, "w" represents the energy measured in joules (J), and "q"...

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia The goal of many chemical analyses is a quantitative analysis, where the amount of a substance in a sample is determined. In order to accurately calculate the concentration of an unknown from a sample, careful sample preparation is key. Every time a sample is handled or transferred, some of the sample can be lost. There are strategies however, for minimizing sample loss. There are also strategies for coping with sample loss and...

Internal Energy

The total of all possible kinds of energy present in a substance is called the internal energy (U), sometimes symbolized as E. Suppose a system with initial internal energy, Uinitial, undergoes a change in energy (transfer of work or heat), and the final internal energy of the system is Ufinal. Change in internal energy equals the difference between Ufinal and Uinitial. Although the values for Ufinal and Uinitial cannot be determined for a system, the first law of thermodynamics only...

Generally, a single battery is not enough to power some devices. In such cases, batteries can be combined in two ways: in series or in parallel. In series, the positive terminal of one battery is connected to the negative terminal of another battery. Hence, the voltage of each battery is added to give the net voltage, which is increased because each battery boosts the electrons that enter it. The same current flows through each battery because they are connected in series. Batteries are...
