Macaulay Brackets

Macaulay brackets are a notation and calculation method in structural engineering for representing discontinuous or concentrated loads along beams within a single mathematical expression. Defined so that ⟨x−a⟩ⁿ equals zero before position a and (x−a)ⁿ after it, they activate each load term only when the beam coordinate reaches its point of application; repeated integration then yields shear force, bending moment, slope, and deflection equations. This singularity-function approach simplifies analysis of beams with multiple point loads, applied moments, or changes in distributed loading, reducing the need to write separate equations for each span and supporting efficient structural design checks.

2014

A shear cell is developed for small-angle neutron scattering measurements in the velocity-velocity gradient plane of shear and is used to characterize complex fluids. Spatially resolved measurements in the velocity gradient direction are possible for studying shear-banding materials. Applications include investigations of colloidal dispersions, polymer solutions, and self-assembled structures.

High Throughput Microfluidic Rapid and Low Cost Prototyping Packaging Methods

2013

In this article we describe different techniques for microfluidic rapid prototyping platforms. The proposed techniques are based on ultraviolet (UV) sensitive and temperature curing epoxies, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based tubing, wire-bonding, and anisotropic adhesive films. The assembling procedures presented are developed for both one-time use devices as well as reusable microfluidic systems.

Determination of the Gas-phase Acidities of Oligopeptides

The determination of the gas-phase acidities of cysteine-containing oligopeptides is described. The experiments are performed using a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. The relative acidities of the peptides are measured using collision-induced dissociation experiments, and the quantitative acidities are determined using the extended Cooks kinetic method.
