Mental Rotation Test

The Mental Rotation Test is a cognitive assessment that measures how accurately and efficiently a person can visualize and compare objects after mentally rotating them in space. Participants typically examine a target object and select matching figures shown in different orientations, requiring spatial transformation, shape comparison, and perspective-taking without physically manipulating the objects. In engineering, the test helps evaluate spatial ability relevant to interpreting technical drawings, understanding three-dimensional designs, and working with computer-aided models. Results can support research on engineering education, inform studies of visual-spatial cognition, and help identify skills that influence performance in design and other technically demanding tasks.

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Visual mental imagery refers to the ability to conjure images in one’s mind’s eye. This allows people to process visual material above and beyond the constraints of a current point-of-view; for example, a person could imagine, using their mind’s eye, how something might look in a different color, or what it would look like if it were made from a different material or rotated and seen from a different perspective. Mental imagery...

Source: Carmen Black, Matthew Goldenberg, and Jaideep Talwalkar; Yale School of Medicine The mental status exam is a clinical evaluation of emotional, perceptual, and cognitive functioning that spans both the fields of psychiatry and neurology. Developing skill in the psychiatric portions of the examination are important to describe salient aspects of the patient's mental state that may be observed during routine history and/or physical exam. Proficiency in the cognitive portions of this...

Stress and Mental Health

Chronic stress profoundly affects mental health, significantly influencing mood, behavior, and overall quality of life. Research closely links chronic stress with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Ongoing exposure to stress can lead to physiological and psychological changes, initiating a cycle of emotional distress and maladaptive coping mechanisms. Individuals with depression often experience challenges in both their personal and professional...

Rotational Inertia

Source: Nicholas Timmons, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Inertia is the resistance of an object to being accelerated. In linear kinematics, this concept is directly related to the mass of an object. The more massive an object, the more force is required to accelerate that object. This is seen directly in Newton's second law, which states that force is equal to mass times acceleration. For rotation,...

Higher Mental Functions of the Brain: Language

2024

Language is a system of communication that allows the expression of thoughts, ideas, and feelings. The brain processes language in both hemispheres. Language formation and comprehension take place in the dominant hemisphere. The dominant hemisphere is responsible for understanding the meaning of spoken, written, or sign language, as well as the ability to communicate. For most people, the left hemisphere is the dominant one. The right hemisphere, then, gives tone and emotional context to the...
