Tumor Tissue Handling

Tumor tissue handling is the controlled collection, transport, preservation, and processing of tumor specimens to maintain their cellular, molecular, and structural properties for reliable analysis. It depends on coordinated sampling and prompt stabilization under conditions that limit ischemia, degradation, contamination, and loss of tissue architecture, while permitting preparation for fixation, cryopreservation, culture, or molecular assays. In engineering research, careful handling supports the development of patient-derived models, engineered tumor microenvironments, biomaterials, and organoid systems that better represent tumor heterogeneity. Standardized procedures improve reproducibility and help researchers connect tissue structure and composition with therapeutic response, disease mechanisms, and the performance of diagnostic or treatment platforms.

FFPE Tumor Tissue Macrodissection: A Technique to Obtain Specific Tumorous Tissue from Unstained Specimens

2023

This video describes a method for the manual macrodissection of cancer tissue from unstained tissue specimens to obtain a specific cancer tissue. The tissue section can be processed further to obtain DNA for genome-wide studies on gastrointestinal cancers.

Preparation Of Neovascular Tissues from Human Glioma Tissues for Quantitative Proteomics Analysis of Tumor Angiogenesis

2026

This protocol successfully prepared sufficient high-quality neovascular tissue from glioma samples using laser-capture microdissection for quantitative proteomics analysis of tumor angiogenesis, overcoming the limitations of studies that traditionally focus mainly on angiogenic factors and providing a large-scale proteomics profile of glioma angiogenesis.

Handling Chemical Spills

2023

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Taslima Zaman, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Since chemicals are commonly used for laboratory research purposes, it is extremely important to be adequately prepared to handle chemical spills or accidental release of hazardous chemicals, which can happen at any time. No matter how minor a spill may be, the inability to respond in an emergency situation could severely endanger public health or the environment. All chemical spills must be properly...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Acclimation and Positive Reinforcement Training Pigs are social animals that respond best to calm, low-stress handling techniques. Acclimation and positive reinforcement training are important refinement strategies recommended...
