Metals Insulators

Metals and insulators are classes of materials distinguished by how readily they conduct electric current and heat, a distinction central to engineering design. In metals, closely spaced energy bands and mobile electrons allow charge to move under an applied electric field, whereas insulators have a large band gap that restricts electron motion and suppresses conduction. This contrast guides the selection of materials for electrical wiring, contacts, insulation, capacitors, thermal barriers, and protective coatings. Understanding conductivity, band structure, temperature effects, and dielectric behavior helps engineers control energy transfer, prevent unwanted current flow, improve device safety, and develop materials for advanced electronic and energy systems.

Conductors and Insulators

Some materials may easily let electrical charges pass through them, while others obstruct their flow. The former are called conductors and the latter insulators. The atomic structures of materials determine whether they are conductors or insulators of electricity. Most metals are conductors. Their atomic configuration is such that one or more electron(s) are loosely bound to the nucleus in each atom. Thus, a sea of mobile electrons are available in them, known as free electrons. Their easy...

Insulation Coordination

2024

Insulation coordination is the process of matching electric equipment's insulation strength with protective device characteristics to protect the equipment against expected overvoltages. This selection is based on engineering judgment and cost. Equipment can generally withstand short-duration high transient overvoltages, but repeated tests with identical waveforms can yield inconsistent results. As a result, standard impulse voltage waveforms are used for testing, defined by specific times for...

Thermal Insulation in Masonry Walls

In hot, dry climates, the thermal mass of masonry walls can be beneficial, absorbing heat during the day and releasing it at night, thereby stabilizing indoor temperatures. However, in most other climates, additional insulation is necessary to enhance thermal resistance. External insulation can be applied using an Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS), which involves affixing panels of plastic foam to the wall and covering them with a polymeric stucco reinforced with glass fiber mesh.

Quadruply Metal-Metal Bonded Paddlewheels

Source: Corey Burns, Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University Paddlewheel complexes are a class of compounds comprised of two metal ions (1st, 2nd, or 3rd row transition metals) held in proximity by four bridging ligands (most commonly formamidinates or carboxylates) (Figure 1). Varying the identity of the metal ion and the bridging ligand provides access to large families of paddlewheel complexes. The structure of paddlewheel complexes allows for metal-metal bonding,...

Group 1 elements are soft and shiny metallic solids. They are malleable, ductile, and good conductors of heat and electricity. The melting points of the alkali metals are unusually low for metals and decrease going down the group, while the density increases going down the group with the exception of potassium (Table 1). Table 1: Properties of the alkali metals Element Electron Configuration Atomic Radius (pm) IE1 (kJ/mol) Melting Point (°C) Density at 25 °C (g/cm3)
