Polymer Extrusion

Polymer extrusion is a continuous manufacturing process that converts polymer materials into products with constant cross-sectional profiles, making it important for efficient, large-scale production. In an extruder, heat and mechanical shear soften or melt polymer pellets, while a rotating screw conveys, mixes, and pressurizes the material before forcing it through a shaped die; cooling then solidifies the profile. Engineering applications include pipes, films, sheets, fibers, insulation, and filament for additive manufacturing. Control of temperature, screw speed, pressure, and cooling conditions influences flow behavior, dimensions, surface quality, and mechanical performance, enabling tailored products from thermoplastics and polymer composites.

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Polymer melts are often formed into simple shapes or "extrudates", such as cylindrical pellets, flat sheets, or pipe, using an extruder.1 Polyolefins are among the most common extrudable polymers. Extrusion involves transporting and melting solid feed, which is sometimes mixed with non-polymeric materials, and the pressure build-up and transport of the melt or mixture.

Dying cells are extruded from epithelial tissues by concerted contraction of neighboring cells without disrupting barrier function. The optical clarity of developing zebrafish provides an excellent system to visualize extrusion in living epithelia. Here we describe methods to induce and image extrusion in the larval zebrafish epidermis at cellular resolution.

Polymers

The word polymer is derived from the Greek words “poly” which means “many” and “mer” which means “parts”. Polymers are long chains of molecules composed of repeating units of smaller molecules, known as monomers. They either occur naturally, such as DNA and proteins, or can be constructed synthetically, like plastics. They have varied structural characteristics, such as linear chains, branched chains, or complex networks, that contribute to the properties that they exhibit. Additionally,...

Here, we present a protocol for hydraulic extrusion of the spinal cord as well as identification and isolation of specific dorsal root ganglia (DRGs) in the same rodent. Compared to standard spinal cord isolation methods, this method is significantly faster and reduces the risk of tissue damage.
