Reconfigurable Robot

A reconfigurable robot is a robotic system that can change its physical shape, arrangement, or functional configuration to perform different tasks, making it an important approach in adaptive engineering. Its modules, joints, or links are repositioned through controlled mechanical connections and software-guided planning, allowing the robot to alter its kinematics, workspace, stability, or movement strategy. This adaptability can reduce the need for task-specific machines and support manufacturing, infrastructure inspection, space operations, and search-and-rescue missions in changing environments. Research on reconfigurable robots also informs modular design, autonomous control, and resilient systems that can respond to new conditions or recover from component limitations.
