Refraction Correction

Refraction correction is the adjustment applied to measurements or images altered when waves change speed and direction as they pass between media with different refractive indices. In engineering, it is calculated by modeling the refractive index and measurement geometry, often using Snell’s law to estimate the resulting angular deviation, apparent position shift, or path-length error. Correcting these effects improves the accuracy of optical instruments, surveying observations, imaging systems, and dimensional measurements. The approach is especially important when light travels through air with changing temperature, pressure, or composition, because spatial refractive-index variations can introduce systematic errors that calibration alone may not remove.

Source: Derek Wilson, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Light travels at different speeds depending on the material through which it is propagating. When light travels from one material to another, it will either slow down or speed up. In order to conserve energy and momentum, the light must change the direction in which it propagates. This bending of light is known as refraction. Some fraction of the...

Distance Corrections

To achieve precise distance measurements, especially in surveying and construction, certain corrections must be applied to account for potential sources of error like the standardization errors, temperature variations, and slope adjustments.Standardization error emerges when measurement equipment undergoes changes, such as wear, repairs, or weather impacts. To address this, surveyors compare the equipment’s readings to a standard. This process identifies any deviation that might lead to...

Power Factor Correction

The power transmission to a factory involves the transfer of apparent power, a combination of active and reactive power. The power factor measures how effectively electrical power is converted into useful work output. The ratio of the real power (KW) that does the work to the apparent power (KVA) supplied to the circuit. A poor power factor means the inductive electrical load absorbs more reactive power, causing a low lagging power factor. This results in large voltage drops across the load...

This protocol describes the fabrication of microfluidic devices from MY133-V2000 to eliminate artifacts that often arise in microchannels due to the mismatching refractive indices between microchannel structures and an aqueous solution. This protocol uses an acrylic holder to compress the encapsulated device, improving adhesion both chemically and mechanically.
