Residual Saturation

Residual saturation is the fraction of a porous medium’s pore volume occupied by a fluid that remains immobilized after another fluid displaces it, making it a key concept in multiphase flow engineering. It develops when capillary forces, interfacial tension, pore geometry, and wettability trap disconnected fluid regions during drainage or imbibition, preventing further movement even under an applied pressure gradient. Engineers use residual saturation to predict oil and gas recovery, groundwater contaminant transport, carbon dioxide storage, and flow through soils and reservoir rocks. Accurate estimates improve multiphase-flow models and support decisions about resource extraction, remediation, and subsurface storage performance.

Imagine adding a small amount of sugar to a glass of water, stirring until all the sugar has dissolved, and then adding a bit more. You can repeat this process until the sugar concentration of the solution reaches its natural limit, a limit determined primarily by the relative strengths of the solute-solute, solute-solvent, and solvent-solvent attractive forces. You can be certain that you have reached this limit because, no matter how long you stir the solution, undissolved sugar remains. The...

Residual Stresses

Residual stresses reside in a structure even after removing the original stress inducer. This phenomenon often arises from varied plastic deformations across different parts of a structure. Consider a rod stretched beyond its yield point. It will not regain its original length due to permanent deformation. Even after load removal, the rod does not entirely lose stress because of uneven plastic deformations, resulting in residual stresses. The computation of these stresses in structures is...

A residual plot is a statistical representation of data used to analyze correlation and regression results. It helps verify the requirements for drawing specific conclusions about correlation and regression. To obtain the residual plot, first, the residual for each data value is calculated, which is simply the vertical distance between the observed and the predicted value obtained from the regression equation. When the residual values are plotted against the variable x, it is called a residual...

We report that the diffraction limit of conventional optical lithography can be overcome by exploiting the transitions of organic photochromic derivatives induced by their photoisomerization at low light intensities.1-3 This paper outlines our fabrication technique and two locking mechanisms, namely: dissolution of one photoisomer and electrochemical oxidation.

Assessing respiratory rate concurrently with pulse measurement is fundamental to patient care, providing valuable insights into the patient's respiratory function. The normal breathing rate for an adult usually falls within a normal range of 12 to 20 breaths per minute. Abnormal respiratory rates can signal underlying health conditions or the need for immediate intervention. Ensuring accuracy in vital sign recordings while prioritizing patient comfort and minimizing anxiety is important.
