Resonant Circuits

Resonant circuits are electrical networks that respond selectively to signals near a characteristic frequency, making them fundamental to frequency control in engineering systems. In an LC circuit, energy alternates between the magnetic field of an inductor and the electric field of a capacitor; at resonance, their inductive and capacitive reactances cancel, producing maximum current in a series circuit or maximum voltage in a parallel circuit at f₀ = 1/(2π√LC). Engineers use resonant circuits for tuning radio receivers, designing band-pass and notch filters, generating oscillations, and matching impedances, while resistance determines bandwidth and quality factor.

Resonance in an AC Circuit

The property of an inductor makes it resist any change in the current passing through it, while the property of a capacitor is to build up the charge across its terminals. Hence, if an inductor and capacitor are connected in series, they have opposite effects on the relative phase between current and voltage. The current through the circuit undergoes forced oscillation at the frequency of the source. The resistance term in an R-L-C circuit acts as a damping term because power is dissipated...

Series resonance occurs in a circuit containing inductive (L), capacitive (C), and resistive (R) elements connected sequentially. At the resonance frequency, the inductive and capacitive reactances are equal in magnitude but opposite in sign, effectively canceling each other. This causes the circuit's impedance is minimal, primarily determined by the resistance R. The resonant frequency of an RLC circuit is defined as: The power dissipation in the resistor is proportional to the square of the...

The Lewis structure of a nitrite anion (NO2−) may actually be drawn in two different ways, distinguished by the locations of the N-O and N=O bonds. If nitrite ions do indeed contain a single and a double bond, the two bond lengths are expected to be different. A double bond between two atoms is shorter (and stronger) than a single bond between the same two atoms. However, experiments show that both N–O bonds in NO2− have the same strength and length, and are identical in all other...

A resistor dissipates energy and obeys Ohm's law, with its voltage proportional to its current. A capacitor stores electrical energy, with its current proportional to the rate of change of its voltage, while an inductor stores magnetic energy, with its voltage...
