Scale-up Process

A scale-up process is the systematic transition from a laboratory or pilot operation to a larger production system while maintaining performance, quality, safety, and economic viability. Engineers identify how changes in volume, geometry, flow, heat and mass transfer, mixing, and equipment capacity affect the process, then use modeling, pilot testing, and controlled iteration to refine operating conditions. Scale-up applies across chemical manufacturing, biotechnology, energy systems, and product development, helping teams predict production behavior, manage technical risks, and reduce costly failures. It also supports the design of reliable, efficient processes that can meet industrial demand while preserving desired product characteristics.

The scale-up of microbial fermentation processes is essential in industrial biotechnology, allowing the transition from laboratory-scale experiments to commercial-scale production while aiming to maintain product yield and quality. This process requires meticulous adjustment of equipment design, process parameters, and contamination control strategies to accommodate increasing culture volumes. At the laboratory scale, cultures are typically maintained in 1 to 10-liter glass or autoclavable...

Hydronium and hydroxide ions are present both in pure water and in all aqueous solutions, and their concentrations are inversely proportional as determined by the ion product of water (Kw). The concentrations of these ions in a solution are often critical determinants of the solution’s properties and the chemical behaviors of its other solutes. Two different solutions can differ in their hydronium or hydroxide ion concentrations by a million, billion, or even trillion times. A common means of...

2013

Surface renewal is a micrometeorological method that is being used increasingly to determine energy fluxes, but its technical complexity makes it inaccessible to a broad audience. We describe the steps needed to set up and calibrate a surface renewal field station, to acquire and process data, and to correctly interpret results.
