Silicon Photonic Chip

A silicon photonic chip is an integrated circuit that generates, guides, modulates, and detects light on a silicon substrate, enabling high-speed communication and optical signal processing in compact hardware. It uses nanoscale silicon waveguides to confine light, while modulators encode electrical data onto optical signals and photodetectors convert received light back into electrical information; lasers may be integrated or coupled from external sources. In engineering, silicon photonic chips support data-center interconnects, telecommunications, sensing, and emerging optical computing systems. Their low-loss signal transmission, bandwidth, and potential for scalable manufacturing make them important for increasing computational performance while managing energy use.
