Structural Design Safety

Structural design safety is the practice of ensuring that buildings, bridges, and other engineered structures can withstand expected loads and remain stable throughout their service life. Engineers assess gravity, wind, seismic, thermal, and accidental forces; select suitable materials; and apply codes, safety factors, and failure-mode analysis to limit excessive stress, deformation, buckling, and collapse. This process connects structural analysis with construction quality, inspection, and maintenance, helping manage uncertainty in material behavior and real-world conditions. Safe structural design protects people and property while improving reliability, supporting resilient infrastructure, and guiding decisions about material efficiency, risk reduction, and long-term performance.

Structure-Activity Relationships and Drug Design

2024

Drug design is a dynamic field that involves discovering and developing new medications based on specific biological targets. This process heavily relies on structure-activity relationships (SAR) and quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) to guide the design and optimization of efficient drugs. SAR studies the intricate relationship between a drug's chemical structure and biological activity. It focuses on understanding how modifications to a drug's structure can influence its...

Robert M. Rioux & Suprita Jharimune, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Among the many hazards present in the laboratory, electrical hazards are one of the most common we must be cognizant of since most of the laboratory equipment we use requires electricity for operation. Improper handling or operation of electrical devices might lead to electric shock with the potential risk of injury or even death. Electric sparks can lead to fire or explosion (since many flammable...

2026

Here, we present a protocol for the structure-guided design of protein-ligand binding interaction between Sanglifehrin A and Cyclophilin A/Ganoderiol-F, essential in discovering new drugs. The stability of the ligand-receptor complex was evaluated using molecular dynamics simulation.

Group Design

The most basic experimental design involves two groups: the experimental group and the control group. The two groups are designed to be the same except for one difference— experimental manipulation. The experimental group gets the experimental manipulation—that is, the treatment or variable being tested—and the control group does not. Since experimental manipulation is the only difference between the experimental and control groups, we can be sure that any differences between the two are due to...
