Time Delay Compensation

Time delay compensation is a control engineering strategy that maintains stable, accurate system performance when measurements, commands, or system responses arrive after a delay. It works by modeling or estimating the delay and adjusting control actions, often through prediction, state estimation, or redesigned feedback, so the controller responds to the system’s current or anticipated state rather than outdated information. These methods are important in networked control systems, robotics, industrial automation, and communication-based processes, where delays can cause oscillation, sluggish responses, or instability. Effective compensation improves tracking accuracy, robustness, and reliability in systems ranging from remote operation to autonomous machines.

The human body employs intricate mechanisms to counteract changes in blood pH, preventing conditions like acidosis (pH < 7.35) and alkalosis (pH > 7.45). These compensatory responses aim to restore normal arterial blood pH by engaging respiratory or renal systems, depending on the source of the imbalance. Respiratory Compensation This mechanism addresses metabolic-induced pH imbalances by adjusting breathing rates. Respiratory compensation begins within minutes of detecting a pH...

In animals, gender is determined by the number and type of sex chromosome. For example, human females have two X chromosomes, and males have one X and one Y chromosome, whereas C.elegans with one X chromosome is a male, and the one with two X chromosomes is a hermaphrodite. In addition to sexual development, the X chromosome has genes involved in autosomal functions such as brain development and the immune system. Therefore, males and females with distinct numbers of X chromosomes will have...

Compensation and reward systems significantly influence employee behavior and can be used to promote ethical conduct, especially in finance and investment. These systems impact motivation and fairness and reflect an organization's core values. While monetary compensation is essential, excessive focus on financial rewards can have adverse effects, encouraging unethical behavior and low moral reasoning. For example, commission-based structures often misalign the interests of employees, firms, and...

The Precision of Visual Working Memory with Delayed Estimation

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Human memory is limited. Throughout most of its history, experimental psychology has focused on investigating the discrete, quantitative limits of memory—how many individual pieces of information a person can remember. Recently, experimental psychologists have also become interested in more qualitative limits—how precisely is information stored? The concept of memory precision can be both intuitive and elusive at once. It is...

2020

Fast photochemical oxidation of proteins is an emerging technique for the structural characterization of proteins. Different solvent additives and ligands have varied hydroxyl radical scavenging properties. To compare the protein structure in different conditions, real-time compensation of hydroxyl radicals generated in the reaction is required to normalize reaction conditions.
