Triangular Weir

A triangular weir is a sharp-crested flow-measuring device that uses a V-shaped notch to determine the discharge of water in an open channel. As water passes through the notch, the upstream head above its vertex controls the flow rate; under free-flow conditions, discharge is calculated from this head using the notch angle, gravitational acceleration, and a discharge coefficient, commonly following a relationship proportional to head raised to the 5/2 power. Engineers use triangular weirs to measure relatively low flows, calibrate channels and laboratory systems, and evaluate hydraulic performance in irrigation, drainage, and wastewater applications.

Sternberg's Triangular Theory of Love

2020

We typically love the people with whom we form relationships, but the type of love we have for our family, friends, and lovers differs. Robert Sternberg (1986) proposed that there are three components of love: intimacy, passion, and commitment. These three components form a triangle that defines multiple types of love: this is known as Sternberg’s triangular theory of love. Intimacy is the sharing of details and intimate thoughts and emotions. Passion is the physical attraction—the flame in the...

A weir is a hydraulic structure designed to partially obstruct an open channel, enabling precise control and measurement of water flow. By forcing water to flow over or through it, a weir allows for accurate determination of discharge rates, making it an essential tool in water resource management. These structures are extensively used in regulating river flows, irrigation systems, and flood control channels.Types of Weirs and Their FeaturesWeirs are categorized primarily into sharp-crested and...

Weir: Problem Solving

Water flow in open channels is often measured using hydraulic structures such as weirs, which allow precise calculation of discharge. In a rectangular channel, flow rates are measured using three types of weirs: rectangular sharp-crested, triangular sharp-crested, and broad-crested. The weir head is set at a fixed height above the channel bottom, simplifying calculations and enabling the relationship between depth and flow rate to be analyzed. For the rectangular sharp-crested weir, the flow...

Rectangular and Triangular Pulse Function

The unit rectangular pulse function is mathematically represented by a rectangular function centered at the origin with a height of one unit. This function is defined by two parameters: T, which specifies the center location of the pulse along the time axis, and τ, which determines the pulse duration. For example, consider a rectangular pulse with a 5V amplitude, a 3-second duration, and centered at t=2 seconds. This pulse can be expressed using the rectangular function, written as,

Parameterizing V-notch Weir Equations for Flow Monitoring in a Drainage Control Structure

2025

This protocol describes methods for obtaining weir flow equation coefficients for a V-notch weir within a drainage control structure using (1) a laboratory calibration procedure and (2) an online tool, the "Weir Flow Equation Coefficients Calculator", developed by the authors. These methods apply to flows contained within the V-notch and overtopping flows.
