Soft Robot Manufacturing

Soft robot manufacturing is the set of design and fabrication methods used to build robots from compliant materials that deform instead of relying solely on rigid joints, enabling safer interaction with people and delicate objects. These systems are commonly produced by molding or 3D printing elastomers, then integrating pneumatic channels, flexible sensors, and embedded actuators whose deformation generates motion under controlled air pressure or other stimuli. Manufacturing choices determine structural compliance, durability, precision, and how reliably a device can be assembled and controlled. In engineering, this approach supports wearable devices, adaptive grippers, biomedical tools, and robots for confined or unstructured environments, while scalable fabrication aims to improve performance and reproducibility.

This protocol describes a rod-based approach, combining 3D-printing and soft lithography techniques for fabricating the soft gripper devices. This approach eliminates the need for an external air source by incorporating a chamber component and reduces the chance of occlusion during the sealing process, particularly for miniaturized pneumatic channels.
