Unit Step Input

A unit step input is an idealized signal that changes instantaneously from zero to a constant value, making it a fundamental test signal in engineering. Mathematically, it is zero before a reference time and one afterward, and its Laplace transform is 1/s; scaling the signal represents a sudden change in applied force, voltage, or command. Engineers use unit step inputs to evaluate transient response, stability, settling time, and steady-state behavior in control systems, electrical circuits, and mechanical systems. Comparing the resulting output with the input helps characterize system dynamics and guide model validation and controller design.

Power Input Measurements in Stirred Bioreactors at Laboratory Scale

The power input in stirred bioreactors can be measured through the torque that acts on the impeller shaft during rotation. This manuscript describes how an air bearing can be used to effectively reduce friction losses observed in mechanical seals and improve the accuracy of power input measurements in small-scale vessels.

Input Efficiency II

2025

In any production process, resources such as labor and capital must be allocated efficiently to maximize output. When multiple producers rely on the same fixed resources, the challenge is to distribute these inputs in a way that ensures no further improvements can be made without reducing another producer’s output.Efficiency in resource allocation is analyzed using isoquants, which represent different combinations of inputs that produce the same level of output. If an allocation allows at least...

Input Efficiency in Resource AllocationInput efficiency refers to the way productive resources like labor and capital are distributed across industries to maximize overall output. Unlike exchange efficiency, which deals with consumer goods allocation, input efficiency determines how resources are assigned to different production activities.Deciding How to Allocate ResourcesSince resources are limited, choices must be made about their use. Should engineers work in the automotive sector or the...

Measurement: Standard Units

Every measurement provides three kinds of information: the size or magnitude of the measurement (a number), a standard of comparison for the measurement (a unit), and an indication of the uncertainty of the measurement. While the number and unit are explicitly represented when a quantity is written, the uncertainty is an aspect of the errors in the measurement results. The number in the measurement can be represented in different ways, including decimal form and scientific notation, which is...

Measurement: Derived Units

The International System of Units or SI system, by international agreement, has fixed measurement units for seven fundamental properties: length, mass, time, temperature, electric current, amount of substance, and luminosity. These are called the SI base units. Units of measurement derived from the mathematical combination of SI base units are called SI-derived units. For example, the ratio of the SI unit for distance (meter; m) and the SI unit for time (second; s) gives the SI-derived unit...
