Ammonium Accumulation

Ammonium accumulation is the build-up of ammonium ions (NH₄⁺) in soil, sediment, or water, an environmental condition that can signal excess nutrient inputs and disrupt ecosystem balance. It occurs when organic matter decomposes or fertilizers and wastewater introduce nitrogen faster than microorganisms can remove it; microbial nitrification then converts ammonium to nitrate, while pH and temperature influence the equilibrium between relatively less toxic NH₄⁺ and ammonia (NH₃). Measuring ammonium accumulation supports water-quality assessment, wastewater treatment, agricultural nutrient management, and pollution control. Excess levels can promote eutrophication, alter microbial communities, deplete oxygen through nitrogen processing, and harm aquatic organisms.

Cost Accumulation and Flow

2026

In manufacturing, production costs are accumulated and tracked to understand how resources are consumed and how they contribute to the final product. This process, known as cost accumulation, involves recording material, labor, and overhead costs and linking them to specific cost objects, such as individual products or production processes.Costs flow through inventory accounts in a sequence that mirrors the physical movement of goods. Initially, raw materials are recorded in the raw materials...

An Assay to Measure the Accumulation of a Fluorescent Antibiotic Probe in Bacterial Cells

2025

This video demonstrates an assay to measure the accumulation of a fluorescent antibiotic probe in bacterial cells. Exposure to an efflux pump inhibitor disrupts the transmembrane proton gradient in bacterial cells, upon which a fluorophore-conjugated antibiotic is added. Inhibition of efflux pumps due to the disrupted proton gradient causes accumulation of the antibiotic inside the bacteria. Bacterial cells are lysed, and the fluorescence intensity is measured to confirm antibiotic accumulation.

Construction and Systematical Symmetric Studies of a Series of Supramolecular Clusters with Binary or Ternary Ammonium Triphenylacetates

This article describes construction of a series of hydrogen-bonding supramolecular clusters in crystals using primary ammonium triphenylacetates, which are recrystallized from non-polar solvents. This selective construction of the supramolecular clusters leads to effective systematical symmetric studies about a correlation between the supramolecular clusters and their components.
